Petra University Participates in Rio+20

 

Petra University was invited by the Brazilian Government to participate in the debates among 30 universities in Rio+20, the UN Summit on Sustainable Development in June 2012. The debate will tackle nine themes including: (Food & nutritional security,  Sustainable development for fighting poverty, Sustainable development as an answer to the economic & financial crisis, the economics of sustainable development, including sustainable patterns of  production & consumption, Sustainable cities & innovation, Unemployment, decent work & migrations,  Sustainable energy for all, Water, Oceans).  

Petra was assigned the theme of "Economics of sustainable development: patterns of production and consumption." The debate sessions, to be held between 16-19 June, will be broadcast live, with the participation of around 2000 persons from the civil society and academia. Recommendations and conclusions will be conveyed to the heads of states at the Summit which convenes between 20-22 June.

The conference's Secretary-General Sha Zukang stated that "the conference offers an opportunity to review and address an integrated set of interrelated global challenges including among others; poverty, water crisis, food security, energy, and disaster prevention.

Rio+20 will witness extended participation of non- governmental organizations so as to come up with new and creative ideas to address problems facing sustainable development. Such participants will include the representatives of private and economic sectors, scientific and academic community.
