With emotion and sadness, the CIHEAM announced the passing away of Cosimo Lacirignola, Secretary General of CIHEAM, on the 2 January 2018, following a sudden and serious illness.

Cosimo Lacirignola was a peace builder and a strong advocate of the sharing of knowledge in the Mediterranean.

As a major actor in the field of cooperation and sustainable development, he was a tireless activist for Mediterranean dialogue.

He bequeaths to the CIHEAM a vision and a commitment that the CIHEAM will eagerly intends to develop.

Lacirignola was a keynote speaker at the Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED) in 2015 conference in Beirut. Najib Saab, AFED secretary General, posted on CIHEAM website: "The Mediterranean is today a sea of tears. The passing away of Cosimo Lacirignola is not only a loss to his family, colleagues and friends, but to all countries of the Mediterranean basin and beyond. An exceptional person, combining a unique depth of knowledge and charisma, with humane and humble character, who put CIHEAM at the forefront of the fight to achieve food security across the Mediterranean, through science and cooperation. We shall all miss you, Cosimo. Rest in peace. The Board of Trustees, Secretariat and community of the Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED) join me in sending sincere condolences to the family and CIHEAM community".

Born on 31 May 1957, at San Pietro Vernotico, in the Apuglia region (Italy), Cosimo Lacirignola was married and father of three children.
