• AFED Annual Conference
AFED Secretariat received official notification that His Majesty King Abdullah II has accepted to be the patron of AFED seventh annual conference. Preparations are under way as we approach the date of this event: 26-27 November 2014. AFED's flagship report on Food Security will be released at the event, featuring new GIS maps of the Arab region, showing arable land, rangeland and renewable freshwater availability. The conference will be held at Le Meridien Hotel, Amman, Jordan under the patronage of. Le Meridien is offering special rates to AFED delegates. • Mediterranean Strategy Review Team
AFED has been invited to contribute to the review process of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD), an activity of Plan Bleu initiative, led by the United Nation Environment Programme (UNEP). Two AFED experts, who co-edited some of the organization's annual reports on the state of Arab environment, will join the review groups: Dr. Ibrahim Abdel Gelil will cover Seas and Coasts, Natural Resources and Climate, while Hussein Abaza will cover Sustainable Cities, Green Economy, and Governance.
• Roundtable on Water and Armed Conflict, Amman, 1 September
Water and armed conflict was the subject of a high level roundtable, held at the King Hussein Royal Club in Amman, by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The one-day event, chaired by HRH Prince El-Hassan bin Talal and Dr. Peter Maurer, President of the ICRC, gathered 18 senior water specialists and policy makers. AFED Secretary General Najib Saab presented brief resume of the findings of AFED reports on water and ecological footprint in the Arab region, and stressed the interlinkages between water, food production and water. He gave overview of the forthcoming AFED report on food security, which also examines the impact of conflicts in various parts of the region over the past 3 years on access to food. http://www.afedonline.org/en/inner.aspx?contentID=1053
•Saab discusses annual conference with HRH Prince El-Hassan and Jordanian Minister of Environment, Amman, 1 September
Secretary General Najib Saab discussed with HRH Prince El-Hassan preparations of AFED report on Food Security and agenda of the Annual Conference. AFED invited HRH to present the conference keynote speech. Saab also met Minister of Environment Dr. Taher Shakhshir, to discuss arrangements for AFED's seventh annual conference. • Arab Consultative Meeting on Accountability Framework for the Post-2015 Development Agenda, Tunisia, 15-16 September
Secretary General Najib Saab will represent AFED at the Arab Consultative Meeting on Accountability Framework for the Post-2015 Development Agenda in Tunisia. The meeting aims to seek regional views and proposals from a wide spectrum of stakeholders in the Arab region, including ESCWA member States, civil society, the private sector and regional organizations, regarding the elements of an accountability framework for the post-2015 development agenda. In particular, the meeting will explore the potential for a regional framework for accountability, anchored at the national level and feeding into the global level.
• AFEDmag Facebook and Portal: Close to 600,000 Followers
The Facebook page of AFED's Magazine, is continuing to attract more followers, who exceeded 587,000. Afedmag is the most popular page of Arabic magazines and environment themes, both as portal and on Facebook. In November 2013, the figure was 100,000, and was expected to reach 200,000 in one year, whereas it multiplied by 6 times in 9 months. http://www.facebook.com/afedmag
• ICARDA joins AFED
International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) joined AFED as a member in the Academic & Research Institutions category. ICARDA is one of the 15 centers supported by the CGIAR. ICARDA's mission is to improve the livelihoods of the resource-poor in dry areas through research and partnerships dedicated to achieving sustainable increases in agricultural productivity and income, while ensuring efficient and more equitable use and conservation of natural resources.
• Third Annual Conference of the Green Growth Knowledge Platform, Venice, 29-30 January 2015
Hussein Abaza, AFED 2011 report co-author, will represent AFED as a member of the Conference Review Committee that will review abstracts and papers on policy-relevant research on fiscal instruments and green economy. Selected abstracts will be invited for presentation at the GGKP conference. Mr. Abaza will be coordinating possible participation of AFED members. http://www.greengrowthknowledge.org/conference2015
